Notes
The Roll lists his address as 5 Henry Street. It misrecords his forename as 'Henry' (he was actually Arthur John Barham), and his unit as RASC (he had actually formerly held the rank of Sergeant Smith, regimental number 53638 in the RGA); it omits his date of death (which was 3/5/1915, by drowning). His Army Pension file records that he was discharged as medically unfit due to melancholia i n February 1915, and that following his death his widow was granted a pension for herself and their two children. (CWGC have no record of him).
(N.B. The Roll is known to include numerous errors, including: misspelt names and inaccurate date/place of death, rank and military unit etc; several casualties were mistakenly listed on it twice [i.e. under their true name and also the alias under which they served]; several other men were listed on it due to the mistaken belief they had died, whereas they had actually survived).
