Captain Richard Arthur Starling originally joined the 3rd Battalion Essex Regiment but transferred to 1st Battalion Coldtsream Guards on 2 July 1890 (London Gazette published 1 July 1890 Issue: 26066 Page: 3634).
Captain Richard Arthur Starling died at Wynberg Hospital on 19 February 1900 from dysentry contracted on the Modder River.
