George Philip Shaw was initially buried in no 1 cemetery Sandakan ,and his remains were exhumed and reburied in Labuan War Cemetery on 17/06/1949 . He became a prisoner of the Japanese Army on the fall of Singapore on 15/02/1942 and was one of approx. 4,500 POW's ( of which approx. 650 were British and the remainder Australian) transported to Sandakan soon after their capture . Only 6, all Australian ,survived their captivity .
