Born in Mundesley, Norfolk on 25 September 1894, he was the 5th son of Edward Charles Everard Owen, a schoolmaster from Harrow, Middlesex. He was educated at Rossall School, Lancashire, between 1908 and 1913 and won a Scholarship to study Classics at Corpus. However, he never took any Oxford exams as he enlisted in September 1914 and was killed 2 years later.
