He was born in Highgate, London, on 2 December 1895, the 1st son of Percy Angier Hurd, a journalist and author, and was educated at Marlborough College, Wiltshire between 1908 and 1913.He studied Classics for a year at Corpus before enlisting in August 1914, serving in Gibraltar, France and Belgium.
