He was born in London on 28 November 1891, the 1st son of Douglas Lyon Holms, a stockbroker, and educated at Beaumont College. At Corpus he achieved a 2nd class degree in Modern History in 1912and undertook Solicitor’s articles upon leaving (1912-1914): however, as a member of the University Contingent of the Officers’ Training Corps he was called up in August 1914.
