He was born in Lambeth, London, on 27 January 1894, the 3rd son of Walter Norris, an oven builder. He was educated at St Olave’s Grammar School and won a scholarship to Corpus, achieving a 1st in his Classics Moderations in 1915 and being elected the Hertford Scholar that year 1915: he was also Secretary of the Sundial Society in 1915. However, he enlisted on 6 July 1915 and was killed 2 years later so never completed his degree.
