Born at Waterloo in Lancashire on 2 November 1894, the 3rd son of Francis Henry Taunton, an insurance agent of Grassendale, Liverpool, Cuthbert was educated at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire (1904-1913). He actually achieved a place at Corpus in 1911, aged only 16, on the basis of the promise of his work but came up only in 1913 for a year: he took no Oxford University exams as he enlisted on 27 January 1915 only to be killed 7 months later.
