Notes
He was born Oxford on 3 September 1888, the 1st son of Arthur Elam Haigh, himself a Fellow of Corpus, and Louisa Matilda Forth [Pilcher]; his guardian was Giles Theodore Pilcher of Godalming, Surrey as his father died. Roderick was educated at Winchester College between 1902 and 1907 and at Corpus achieved a Pass degree in Greek Philosophy and History in 1909 as well as Military History in 1910: he was also President of the Debating Society in 1910. He became a regular soldier upon leaving college, serving with the Queen’s (West Surrey) Regiment, in Gibraltar, South Africa and then France and Belgium as part of the BEF in 1914. A bequest left to honour his father was later used for the Roderick Haigh Exhibition which offers 2 book prizes for Classics Moderations and was established in 1922.
