He was born in Tralee, Co. Kerry, on 22 December 1892, the only son of Singleton Goodwin, a county surveyor, of Tralee and was educated at Bromsgrove School, Worcestershire. He won a Scholarship to Corpus, achieved a 2nd in his Classics Moderations in 1914 but, as a member of the University Contingent of the Officers’ Training Corps he was called up in November 1914 so was unable to finish his degree.
