Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. The son of an archdeacon, he had been educated at Charterhouse and then Magdalen College Oxford where he read History: in 1899 he also represented the Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the high jump in their athletics match versus Harvard and Yale. He was killed in a costly night engagement when his mounted detachment was trying to relieve Colonel Benson's Column which had been cut off by the Boers. He is also commemorated on IWM 2599.
