Notes
Known as "Jack". Family state that although the date of death was established as 30 November 1944 it is not certain that this is accurate – have always suspected that Grandmother chose this date because it was St Andrews day. St Andrews is situated in The Drive Ilford and they lived a few doors down. Sadly some decades later she died on this date.
Jack joined up as a TA in Leeds in 1941. He was a ‘hotel cook’ a chef, so was soon transferred to the ACC. However for whatever reasons he volunteered for the SAS – I believe in the UK and was sent to North Africa end of 1942 to the 2SAS training camp in Philippeville.
In Jan 1944 he was part of Operation Maple/Thistledown, blew up railway lines and was probably captured and executed as a saboteur.
Jack in also remembered on the Monte Cassino Memorial as well and the SAS Roll of Honour
