Notes
The Roll lists his address as Bishop's Road, and that he was entitled to the Mons Star medal. It incorrectly states that he died on 25/9/1914 serving in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders; he in fact died on 27/9/1914, serving in the Highland Light Infantry.
(CWGC records that Private W. Wright, regimental number 10675, died on 27/9/1914 serving in the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, and is now buried in grave X.AB.9 at Terlincthun British Cemetery at Wimille in France, having been exhumed from Angers West Cemetery at Maine et Loire in May 1973.
'Soldiers Died in the Great War' records William as a native of Peterborough. The Medal Rolls record that he was sent to France on 14/8/1914 and died of wounds on 27/9/1914. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that William was a former clerk who had been born in Woodston near Peterborough; that he enlisted on 5/3/1907, died of wounds on 27/9/1914 serving in the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, and that his legatee was Miss Eileen Forde; they also record that the Will he left in favour of Miss Eileen Forde (later Mrs Eileen Weilbach) had been sent to White Esquire Solicitors at 175 High Road, Ilford. The marriage of Eileen Forde to Einar C Weilbach was registered in Romford District in 1918.
On 10/10/1914 the Peterborough Advertiser reported that Private W. Wright of Bishop's Road, a Reservist, had been called up on August Bank Holiday, which was stated to have been the week in which he was due to marry. Having gone to the Front, the report stated that his parents had received a note within the previous few days from a nurse in a field hospital in France, stating that their son was seriously wounded and "complications made recovery improbable". A few hours later, a further message was received that he had passed away leaving a dying message for his fiancee. The Advertiser reported that, in response to the family's enquiries, the Regimental Records Office had stated they had received no news of William's death. Both his fiancee and his family were reported to be hoping that there had therefore been some mistake).
[Unlike this 1921 version of the Roll, the 1994 version did not include this man under his correct name 'William Wright'; It instead wrongly listed his personal/death details as relating to 'Thomas Henry Wright' - whose true death etc details it omitted]. JK
