Notes
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission currently records that Lieutenant Ronald Percival Griffith Owen, of the Royal Naval Reserve, died on 26/3/1942 aboard HM Submarine P39. (P39 was sunk by enemy aircraft on 26/3/1942, while undergoing repairs at Malta). However, they have recorded his date of death incorrectly.
Lieutenant Owen was listed on HMS Olympus' Roll of Honour as a passenger when she sank on 8/5/1942, having previously served on Submarine P39. His death on the Olympus in May, rather than on P39 in March, is substantiated by the fact that he was listed in the Admiralty Communique 192A among the officers missing presumed killed "while taking passage in HM Submarine OLYMPUS". It is further substantiated by The National Archives document reference ADM 358/693, which lists Lieutenant R.P.G. Owen among the 11 officers who died on HMS Olympus on 8/5/1942. The 1943 Probate Index recorded his date of death as "on or since 8 May 1942".
In light of the evidence, documents have been submitted to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, requesting that they amend Lieutenant Owen's date of death to 8/5/1942.
