Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. John served with the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment and played football for them. He was wounded and invalided home from Ypres but, despite returning to his regiment, evidently never fully recovered. He spent time in hospital in Rouen with frostbite, returned to his unit in Halifax and was with them in Tynemouth only to die of double pneumonia in the Armstrong College Military Hospital in Newcastle on 25th July 1915. He is buried at the Christ Church in Todmorden and is also commemorated on IWM 2224 and 2721.
