Information sheet 1: SOUTHREY SOLDIERS' WINDOWS/ These designs for the west/ windows of the church commemorate/ the military personnel who came from/ this village but sadly lost their/ lives on active service.
I have chosen to represent them/ altogether as 'brothers in arms'/ despite the fact that nearly a/ hundred years separate those who/ died in the First World War and/ Lance Corporal Ben Tate, who so/ tragically lost his life in 2011.
Information sheet 2: I have shown them standing on the/ far side of the River Witham that runs/ by Southrey, as symbolic of them both/ leaving the village and leaving/ this country to go on active service/ abroad. Behind them is a stylistic/ representation of a few of the/ significant buildings of their/ home village.
These panels have been made using/ traditional stained glass techniques./ The figures of the men and the/ buildings have been painted in finely/ ground glass mixed with metallic/ oxides and then fired several times in/
a kiln to fuse the images permanently/ onto the surface of the smooth/ mouth-blown handmade glass.
Information sheet 3: The village background has been cut/ from many different shades and/ colours of Cathedral glass./ The panels were then built, soldered/ and cemented. After they had been/ triple glazed with clear toughened/ glass on either side they were fitted/ into the UPVC frames, thus/ protecting them and providing heat/
and sound insulation./
In this year of commemoration of/ the hundred years since the outbreak/ of the First World War, these panels will/ be a fitting tribute to the Southrey men/ who made the ultimate sacrifice.
