Additional general notes on the memorial
Checking the history' ofHMS London confirms this death as a casualty in the Yangtse incident, in which HMS Amethyst was caught in the middle of the Chinese civil war, and shelled by the
Communists, killing 43 crew. Amethyst was trapped 140 miles up the river Yangtsefor some months, before escaping to sea under cover ofdarkness, while beingfired on, on the night of21st April 1949. It appears that HMS London assisted in this escape, and was hit by gunfire, resulting in the loss of 70
crew.
